What they accomplish at the University flows through global circuits to spark human progress on the grand scale. Dynamic courses are offered in more than 180 majors and programs. At UM, a student can construct learning around individual strengths, interests, curiosities, passions, and goals by offering a unique array of learning options in our nine undergraduate schools and two graduate professional schools. The Cognates Program allows a student to use those options to create an education that is both broad and deep and that displays who the student is and what the student cares about. Because of our geographical location, the University of Miami offers what most places cannot: a mosaic of cultures and traditions amid a beautiful subtropical environment. Our experiential approach nurtures curiosity and exploration of the world outside the classroom while also bringing the world to the University of Miami campus. The value of a University of Miami education is the ability to become part of this vast and renewable resource, gaining knowledge, inspiration, camaraderie, and connections that will prove invaluable for years to come

Strayer University

Foundation and early history
Dr. Siebert Irving Strayer founded Strayer's Business College in Baltimore, Maryland in 1892.[1] Strayer established the college to teach business skills to former farm workers, including shorthand, typing and accounting. In its first decade of operations, enrollment at the school gradually increased, attracting students from other states, and in 1904 Strayer opened a branch of the school in Washington, D.C.
Enrollment further expanded as demand for trained accountants grew after the passage of the Revenue Act of 1913 and World War I increased the need for government clerks with office skills. During the 1930s, the college was authorized to grant collegiate degrees in accountancy by Washington, D.C.'s board of education. The school founded Strayer Junior College in 1959, when it was given the right to confer two-year degrees. In 1969, the college received the accreditation needed to grant four-year Bachelor of Arts degrees and was renamed Strayer College
In 2012, a United States Senate committee reported that, as of 2010, 83 percent of Strayer's 2,471 faculty members were employed part-time.Strayer's faculty are not required to do research but are encouraged to focus on teaching.
Strayer University's total number of students is approximately 40,000.According to the university, two thirds of Strayer's students are women and over half are African American or Hispanic.Since the early 2000s, Strayer University has had a high proportion of minority students. The college has had more women students than men since the late 1990s.The average age of students at the college is approximately 33, and the majority work full-time. Many students receive financial assistance from federal government financial aid programs or education assistance programs operated by the U.S. Department of Defense and U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs; U.S. federal government sources accounted for 84.9% of Strayer's 2010 revenue. In addition, about one-quarter of students have tuition assistance from their employers. In 2010 the U.S. Department of Education, reported that the repayment rate of federal student loans at Strayer University was 25%. Strayer claimed its loan repayment rate to be 55%.
Strayer has higher rates of student retention than other for-profit schools. Among students first enrolled in 2008-9, by mid-2010 slightly less than one-third had withdrawn without completing their degree programs. Withdrawal percentages ranged from 17.9% for master's degree students to 48.8% for students seeking an associate degree. In 2011 the Washington Post claimed that Strayer had a 15% graduation rate, listing it among the lowest college graduation rates in the Washington, D.C., area. Strayer claimed the graduation rate for its full cohort of bachelor's students was 33%. In 2013 USA Today listed Strayer University of Washington D.C. as a "red flag" institution for posting a student loan default rate that surpassed its graduation rate

Study in Texas

Study in Texas main image
Want to study in Texas? Read on to find out more about this distinctive (and massive) state, including the top universities in Texas and the state’s best cities for students.
A nation in its own right from 1836 to 1845, Texas is the second biggest US state (covering more than 261,000 square miles) and is famous for its distinctive culture and heritage – including well-known aspects such as country music, the art of the Texas barbeque, and reveling in a good old rodeo which sees modern-day cowboys become local, bull-riding heroes.
Part of the Deep South region, Texas borders Mexico to the south, Louisiana and Arkansas in the east, Oklahoma in the north and New Mexico in the west. Due to its large scale, Texas differs wildly in climate and geography depending on where you are. The east is swampy and forested, while the southeastern Gulf Coast (home to Houston) is tropical and often uncomfortably humid. There are mountainous deserts in the west and the snowy plains of Panhandle in the north.
Largely due to its location on large petroleum reserves, discovered in the early 1900s, Texas has a thriving energy industry. This has underpinned the economic growth of the state, helping other industries and the state’s higher education system to develop in turn. Texas also has a strong standing in the technology, biomedical sciences and aerospace sectors.
Those interested in studying in Texas will find plenty of choice, including seven universities in Texas which rank among the world’s best in the 2013/14 QS World University Rankings®. Keep reading to find out more about the top universities in Texas, and the Texan cities where you could be spending your student years.

Universities in the US

The sheer volume and variety of universities in the US means that you can be pretty confident of finding a suitable institution in your preferred surroundings. And if you don’t get it right the first time, moving between universities in the US is not uncommon.
Undergraduate degrees at US universities typically take four years to complete. The first part of the degree is usually spent studying a wide range of subjects – some required and some electives – after which students choose the subject or subjects on which they want to focus – known as “major(s)”.
You may also earn a “minor” qualification alongside your major by completing classes in an additional field. This is often used to supplement the major degree. For example, business majors often minor in economics, while liberal arts majors may minor in philosophy. Some students also choose minors simply to explore a subject of interest to them without having to commit to a full study of the subject, and regardless of whether it pertains to the field in which they seek employment.

10 Questions to Ask Before Refinancing Your Student Loans

Refinancing your student loans can be a great way to manage your student loan repayment situation and improve your overall financial health.

Keep in mind, student loan refinancing can be confusing and lead to problems down the road if you don’t make the right decisions when applying for refinancing or consolidation.
We have prepared 10 questions that you should ask before refinancing your student loans.

1.) What is the term of the refinanced student loan?

When you refinance your student loans, banks might offer varying term options. The “term” is the expected amount of years in which you are expected to repay your loan. Banks typically offer 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 year repayment terms. The biggest consideration to keep in mind is how much you can afford to pay now and how much interest you will accrue over the lifetime of repayment. For example, on a 5 year term you will accrue the least amount of interest, but your monthly payments will be the highest vs. longer term student loans.

2.) Is the new student loan variable or fixed interest rate? Your student loans have either variable or fixed interest rates. By refinancing, you can convert a variable interest rate to a fixed interest rate loan or vice versa. Fixed interest rates tend to be less risky, whereas variable interest rate loans fluctuate due to economic conditions.
Due to the 2008 recession, interest rates over the past 4 years have been historically low. If the economy improves, interest rates will most likely rise over time, making variable interest rate student loans less favorable when compared to fixed rate student loans. In the current economy, fixed rate student loans tend to have a higher interest rate, which means you might end up paying more interest over the long term.

3.) What are the repayment terms? When does the repayment start? What will my monthly payments be? How do I pay? What fees can occur if I miss a payment or default on my student loans?

4.) Is there an origination fee? Some banks charge a student loan origination fee up to 2% of the total amount you are requesting to be refinanced. For example, if you refinance $60,000 in student loans, you will pay a $600 for a 1% origination fee. The origination fee is usually added to the loan amount due and you will not need to pay this amount upfront.

5.) Will they combine federal and private student loans? Some financial institutions, such as Commonbond and SoFi are now refinancing federal and private loans bundled together. This can ultimately help you get a lower interest rate to save money, but be careful as you lose most alternative and flexible repayment plans associated with the federal government loan program.

6.) Do I need a cosigner? Do you offer cosigner release? If your income or credit score is too low, the bank might require a cosigner to insure your student loans in the case of default. Alternatively, banks like cuStudentLoans, offer cosigner release, which releases any existing cosigners from your student loans. This can help free up revolving credit for your cosigners and allow them to make other purchases such as a mortgage or auto loan.

7.) What are the typical credit score, salary, and debt-to-income requirements? From our research, most banks require a 650 credit score or higher and minimum monthly salary of $2,000, depending on your total debt load. Be sure to ask the credit score requirements before submitting your application.

8.) What are the maximum amounts of debt they will refinance? Banks typically have a maximum amount of debt they will refinance. This amount is varies by bank and education level, such as undergraduate, graduate, and other certificate programs.

9.) Do they refinance student loans from my school and/or my degree program? Ask which schools are eligible for the refinancing product. Some banks don’t lend to student loan borrowers who have attended for-profit private institutions, community colleges, and/or certificate programs.

10.) What type of support and service do you provide? At the Student Loan Hero office, this is the most important question we ask our banking partners. As student loan borrowers ourselves, we have worked with banks that provide terrible customer service, not to mention banks that are hostile and threatening. Refinancing your student loans means that you will be working with this bank for the next 5-25 years. Be sure to do your research before refinancing your student loans!

Student Loans

Prior to the late 20th century, pursuing a college degree wasn’t as quite as important as it is today. In fact, in the past, if you were a college graduate, you were considered to be in the minority; however, today, a college degree is essentially a requirement for a majority of careers. As the need for a college education increased, the less affordable it became, therefore, student loans became a must. While student loans do help provide individuals with a higher education, they can also get you into heaps of debt.
While we can all benefit from a college education, the future looks pretty bleak for those with student loans. And, if you’re still paying off your student loans and have children of your own, how do you expect to save enough to provide your kids with the same opportunities you had? The best thing you can do to give them the best future possible is to prepare them as much as you can, such as teaching them about money management at an early age. Take a look at this infographic from ConsolidatedCredit.org and find out more about the history of student debt in the United States, and what college students with loans should expect during the coming years.

Study in UK

The United Kingdom of Great Britain or the United Kingdom or the UK as it is known in common parlance now comprises - England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. There was a time when the East India Company and the British monarchy ruled over half the known world; setting up trading outposts, colonies and eventually leaving an English imprint on places as far spread out as Australia, India and the West Indies. Today Great Britain has a constitutional monarchy with her royal majesty - Queen Elizabeth II still inspiring the people of the country.

The UK is still a top-choice for Asian Students
As wine matures with age and tastes better - institutions like the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge have stood the test of time and continue to inspire and challenge students to become outstanding individuals and responsible citizens with their excellent courses. The UK has a strong Asian community with people of Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan and Nepalese origin.

Why it makes sense to opt for the UK?
Still the very best for education in law, sciences, management and the humanities The finest research and teaching facilities Students can find affordable housing and lots of student hostels and home-stays are available Strong Asian community in most major cities in the UK for a 'feel of home' A degree from a reputed institution in the UK is a great achievement and is a 'great positive' on one's CV. A number of scholarships are offered by numerous organisations and universities The option to work part-time during classes and gain valuable work-experience Meritorious students can progress to a doctoral course and conduct research

QS World University Rankings:
In the latest QS World University Rankings, four institutions from the UK feature in the 'top-10 list'. They are:
  1. University of Cambridge - 3rd position internationally
  2. UCL - University College London - 4th position internationally
  3. Imperial College London - 5th position internationally
  4. University of Oxford - 6th position internationally
Though the United States of America still rules the roost with institutions in the 'top-10 list' institutions from the UK are going equally strong and going by recent trends a steady stream of Asian students are applying to institutions like Bangor University, University of Edinburgh, University of Dundee and the University of Glasgow. This trend is also linked to the fact that these cities are much less expensive when compared to living in London, Birmingham or Leeds.

Life in the UK
Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and England all have their specific traits - depending on which institution and city you reside in the way of life could either be extremely hectic and busy say in London or gentle, relaxed and simple say while studying at Dundee or Bangor. The British are very private people; the calm, reserved nature should not be mistaken for arrogance. While travelling in 'The Tube' or the London Underground railway system; one can notice people standing and sitting methodically; lost in their own worlds, reading a book a newspaper or listening to music. It is very rare for strangers to make conversation in a public place; this is practically the exact opposite of the easy-going and friendly and frank nature of life in the USA.
Punctuality and the queue system are hallmarks of British life; one is expected to be on time for an appointment and it is considered impolite to be late without informing your host or the person whom you are scheduled to meet. The queues are methodical and display a sense of military-precision, be it a bank, railway station or an airport one has to wait for one's turn in queues. There is no shouting and jostling and manic shoving of people in queues that are a feature of the way of life in most South-Asian countries.
Places to Visit:
The UK offers a treasure-trove of places to visit for the intrepid traveller. Some popular places to visit in London are - Windsor Castle, London Zoo, London Bridge, The Tower of London, Madame Tussauds Wax Museum, Saint Paul's Cathedral and much more.
The best thing to do would be to get a London Pass a pre-paid card and get access to more than 60 popular tourist destinations in and around London. The card comes with various validity periods and is extremely useful for sight-seeing in London.
Scotland with its highlands and enchanting landscapes, distilleries and bagpipers playing tunes on their bagpipes dressed in their kilts; and Wales and Northern Ireland also have their own enchanting sight-seeing spots.

The Way Ahead:
Tighter immigration laws and an increase in tuition and accommodation costs have made the UK a bit less accessible than before and the UK is facing stiff competition from countries like Singapore and Malaysia which offer courses at a much lesser cost. In spite of all this, the allure of a British degree is too good and applicants to popular institutions like the London School of Economics, the College of Law and Brunel University continue to grow in number.

Study in Malaysia

Studying in Malaysia - How to Go About It?
Malaysia is a country that plays host to over 90,000 international students hailing from nearly 100 different countries and it plans to have 200,000 international students in by the year 2020.
In comparison with countries like the US and the UK, Malaysia has a relatively low cost of living and student tuition fee. This is one of the prime reasons Malaysia is a preferred study destination among students across the world. That being said, the budget is certainly not the only reason why students choose to study here; it is popular for transnational education with its many foreign university branch campuses. Quality tertiary education comes at a reasonable price in Malaysia; students can acquire a UK engineering degree in Malaysia in three years for nearly RM 51,000. The original cost of the three year programmes in the UK would be around RM 144,000- which is more than double the cost in Malaysia.
Malaysia is a country which is colourful with its culturally diverse societies and beautiful landscapes. Its buzzing metropolis and one of Asia’s most exciting cities, Kuala Lumpur, not only boasts Southeast Asia’s tallest skyscrapers but is also home to numerous Malaysian top universities.
In general, these are the costs involved in student life in Malaysia:
  • Cost of living- depending on choice of lifestyle, location and accommodation
  • The course fees which could vary largely base on programme chosen and educational institution chosen.

Cost of Living

Overall, students can lead a comfortable life style with RM 1,200 on a monthly basis. Students will typically have to spend around RM300 to RM450 for their monthly accommodation. Based on the location and the type of accommodation chosen and available facilities, this price will vary. Housekeeping and food expenses come to around RM 450 every month. Laundry expenses come to around RM 60 per month. Travelling expenses for students on an average will be nearly RM30-50 per month. Mobile phone bills and telecommunication utilities will be around RM30-80. The educational materials for the programme chosen could come anywhere between RM50 to 100- depending on the programme requirements. Students are advised to keep aside RM50 every month for medical expenses and for personal expenses, a budget of RM 100 to 200 is estimated to be needed but could vary depending on the kind of lifestyle students choose to lead.

Course Fees

The course fees comprises tuition fees and relevant academic expenses such as registration fee, any deposits that are required to be made, lab fees, health insurance fees,  and examination fees.
Types of programmes available:

  • Some of the popular subject areas of bachelor degrees in Malaysia are psychology and social studies.
  • Postgraduate degree programs are available in numerous subject areas inclusive of the Masters of Business Administration (MBA). The subject areas that Malaysia’s business schools cover are commerce, accounting, business administration, management, marketing, finance, and business communication.
  • Malaysia is also quite popular for its twinning degree programmes; these programs require students to take up one and a half to two and a half years in Malaysia and take up the remaining period of the three year programme in the respective university overseas. Some international colleges and some foreign universities and colleges have set up branch campuses in Malaysia. Among them are : Monash University (Sunway, Selangor), University of Nottingham (Selangor), SAE Institute, Swinburne University of Technology (Kuching, Sarawak Campus), Curtin University of Technology (Miri, Sarawak Campus) and Raffles Design Institute (Kuala Lumpur). These campuses allow students to obtain a foreign degree in Malaysia with very affordable rates.

Study in New Zealand

Studying in New Zealand - How to Go About It!
New Zealand is an island nation made up of two main islands - the North and the South and numerous smaller islands.  Separated by over 900 miles from its bigger neighbour Australia; it was a long time before Europeans actually settled in New Zealand. The original inhabitants of New Zealand are Polynesians who developed the Maori traditions that exist even today. New Zealand is not just an amazingly beautiful country with spectacular scenery; but a top-notch higher education destination as well.
In the latest QS World Rankings two institutions from New Zealand have made it to the top 200 institutions in the world. These are - The University of Auckland ranked 94 and University of Otago ranked 155.

Quality of Education:

New Zealand offers a top-class education through numerous institutions, which offer internationally recognised qualifications that match with the ones offered in the USA and the UK. With a strong focus on research a number of universities are also involved in research in areas as varied as health and medicine, automobile technology, renewable energy resources and much more.

Top Institutions in New Zealand:

The top-ranking institutions in New Zealand are:
University of Auckland
University of Otago
University of Canterbury
Victoria University of Wellington
Massey University
University of Waikato
Auckland University of Technology

Applying to a New Zealand Institution:

All the higher education institutions in New Zealand have well-designed websites, which have detailed information on applying for a place at the institution. Students are usually directed to fill an online form and send in copies of their official mark transcripts, ‘letters of recommendation’ and ‘statement of purpose’ to the institution along with the prescribed application processing fee. Once the application is scrutinised and accepted the institution contacts the student and guides them with the visa application process.
Students can submit an application for a student visa with the offer letter that they receive from the institution. Please visit the New Zealand Immigration website for more details about all necessary eligibility requirements when applying for a student visa.

Cost of Living:

The cost of living varies from city to city though the difference is not vast. Primarily if students choose to live on-campus they might be able to save on accommodation and travelling costs. New Zealand has a good public transport system and students can use a ‘monthly pass’ to save on transportation costs.
A meal in a regular restaurant would cost roughly 15 to 20 NZ$; a 1.5 litre bottle of mineral water costs 3 NZ$ and a regular cappuccino will cost about 4NZ$. Students who wish to opt for accommodation outside the campus may have to shell out between 1000 NZ$ to 1500 NZ$ as rent for a single bedroom apartment based on the location of their apartment.

Average Tuition Fee:

The average annual tuition fee year ranges from NZ$23000 to NZ$28000.

Work-opportunities:

Students of full-time courses lasting for twelve months or more can work up to 20 hours in any given week during the academic year and also work full-time during the Christmas and New Year holidays.
Students who complete their course and aim to search for a job in New Zealand can apply for an extended one-year job-search visa.

The Way Ahead:

Students really keen on a foreign education and not comfortable with ‘getting lost in the crowd’ in the USA and the UK might want to consider New Zealand as a good alternative. The medium of instruction is English and the people have respect for each other stemming from the strong Maori roots of the locals. The country is breathtakingly beautiful, offering students an amazing student-life, with a study-play-work balance. Students also benefit from a strong research-centric higher education system, allowing them to finish their course and secure an extra year of stay on their visas to find a job in New Zealand.
